During Term 3 at Thomas Hassall Anglican College, Year 6 students focus heavily on leadership, creative arts participation, Book Week celebrations and transition preparation for high school. Year 6 has also implemented new ways of learning, like engaging book reviews for homework and extension classes that involve brain-ticklers and new activities that have been recently taking place like soccer, basketball, etc. Moreover, they are continuously improving their ability to problem solve, develop greater independence and are working harder each day.
High School Transition
High school transition has been filled with opportunities and helpful materials, teaching us about Art, Science, Japanese and History. These lessons will translate into real life skills helping prepare us for the future like how science can teach you about medicine and how to filter water from a lake when you're camping.
Art
Art this year has been better compared to past years as we get to do things that are more exciting like being able to do a painting for Father’s day in September. This encourages us to talk to our parents and find out what they like and dislike and learn about things we didn’t know about them before. We have been learning about Andy Warhol which is our art inspiration for using different kinds of shades and colours when painting. Instead of skin colour being the normal it could be like a green, yellow, any type of colour really.
Mathematics
In Mathematics our tasks have been to expand our critical thinking, learning to perfect our times tables and figure out areas of irregular shape and many more. We have also been learning distributive property, which is when we break a number up and add them by their place value.
Sport
In sport we have been learning to use our abilities in soccer and basketball, increasing our skills and having fair sportsmanship. IPPSO is a sport organisation that has a variety of sports that consist of T-Ball and softball, Netball, Basketball, Soccer, Modified Volleyball, Oztag and much more. They host competitions and training sessions. They also hire experienced people in that sport to teach the kids.
Writing
In writing, we have been learning about literary techniques to enhance our writing skills and capture the reader’s attention. We have been revealing the mystery of the Yahoo creature, researching and writing texts to express our opinion whether we believe Yahoo exists or not.
Science
In science we have been learning about the food chain and ecological sustainability. The food chain is a sequence of organisms in an ecosystem that in an order rely on each other by a staircase of prey to an apex predator.
Geography
In Geography we have been learning about the equator and how seasons and climate zones work. The equator is the invisible line in the middle of the earth, which separates the Earth into two halves: the northern and southern hemispheres. The seasons mark how we live, if the Earth is moved from its tilted axis by a bit our season could become ruined and harsh
Year 6 life is busy and there are so many opportunities for us to extend our knowledge, grow our confidence and work well as a team cohort.
