Years 7 and 8 materials technology students have been challenged to design and create timber tea light candle holders. The project combined digital design with hands-on craftsmanship, giving students an understanding of what it means to bring an idea from concept to creation.
Students began by creating their initial concepts using the 3D design software SketchUp. These digital drawings helped students experiment with the shape, structure, and functional aspects of their tea light candle.
With their designs finalised, students moved into the workshop to bring their ideas to life. Using a variety of hand and power tools including tenon saws, disc sanders, bench drills, and lots of sandpaper they carefully cut, shaped, and smoothed their timber pieces. Throughout the process, students were encouraged to align their physical product as closely as possible with their original SketchUp design, developing skills in accuracy, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
It’s been a joy to watch our students grow in confidence, take pride in their work, and share their creations with their classmates. Not only have they developed valuable skills in timber work, but they've also gained a deeper appreciation for the design process, from digital modelling to tangible results.
